Baby Sea Turtle Watch - July and August
July and August is when the giant endangered female Loggerhead turtles come in to nest. Join Harbor Island Turtle Watch volunteers to search for turtle tracks and mark new nests for protection from predators. They never know what they will find. The walk is about 1 1/2 miles for each section (3 total).
The baby turtles start hatching from July thru October. Team leader Fran Nolan also goes into the hatched nests three days after they emerge on their own to inventory the nest counting egg shells, unhatched eggs, and she sometimes finds babies that did not go out with the group.
Inventory: 7:30 a.m.
Walks: starting daily at 6:30 a.m.
$10 suggested donation to the Harbor Island Turtle Watch Program
Notice needed the day before to allow access to the gated island.
